According to mythology the name Ikaria was given to the island from Ikarus, son of the famous craftsman Daidalus, that king Minoas was keeping as a prisoner. As a result his wings were melted from sun's rays and poor Ikarus was drown in the sea. His inconsolable father took the dead body and burried it on the island's coast.
