A 13-year-old boy with sickle cell disease has left distal thigh pain. His temperature is 38.5 gr C (101.3 gr F) and his WBC is 14,500/mm (normal 3,500 to 10,500/mm cub.). Plain radiographs are unremarkable. The rest initial management is
